2011 East Sussex Tournament
Sunday saw the 7th Annual East Sussex Junior Championships. This was the second year the tournament was at the
6-court University of Brighton Sports Centre, Eastbourne. Now running on one weekend instead of over the usual
two has proved not as successful due to the oversubscribed number of entries. The event although very successful,
ran overtime and two ‘plate' sections were dropped due to the time restrictions. This event is aimed at those players
who are not selected for the County teams. As mentioned, the event had an extremely high entry, exceeding last
year's figures. The most surprising was that there was less boys than last year and four times as many girls. There
was still a low entry in the younger girls, so for the first time we introduced a ‘unisex' section in the U11's and U13's.
Over 80 youngsters from all over east Sussex took part, and there was strong competition in most of the rounds.
Presentations were made by former ESJBA Chairman, Bruce Peapell and, Mr. Terry Bagwell from the
Mid Sussex Tournament Committee.

2011 U11 Tunbridge Wells Junior
Well done to the following players who did well at the recent Tunbridge Wells tournament. Steven Key got to the Semi-finals of U15 BS & Ben Phillimore for reaching the finals and coming runner-up (21-18), so close. Ben Spillard & partner reached the finals of the U15 Boys doubles
Greg Thompson got to the finals of the U17 boys singles and closely lost 21-19. Greg and his partner also were runners up in the Boys Doubles. What a good effort for Greg after such a difficult year for him. Bethany Large also reached the finals of the Girls U15 singles and ended up as runner-up. Well done Bethany. Bethany & her partner did slightly better and were winners of the U15 girls doubles. Finally in the U17 girls Fiona Leggat and Nicola palmer were the doubles winners and once again they faced each other in the singles with Nicola as winner and Fiona coming runner-up.
The organisers also made a special comment on the performance and excellent behaviour of our players. Well done

East Sussex squad U16 and U14 players produced another great set of results at the recent Mid Sussex Badminton Tournament at the Olympos Centre in Haywards Heath on Sunday 31st Jan and Sunday 7th Feb.
William Savage took the U-14 boys main event singles title and in the U-14 doubles squad team mates Harry Vanstone & Stephen Key took the trophy in convincing style.
At the U-16 event E Sussex squad members again had great results. In the U-16 girls tournament Louise Earey and Maddie Hayes won the doubles main event and Lousie also came runner-up in the singles. Emily Collins took the U-16 plate singles trophy.
In the U-16 boys event seasoned squad partners Greg Thompson and Oliver Penver won the doubles main event trophy.
Well done to all those mentioned, plus ESJB U11 players Josh Weblin and Sam, and also to the other squad members that competed.
